Where do you land
in the AI debate?
This intro was written by me (a human).
My background is in AI and ML, and I figured this meant I knew about AI. And I do, if we're strictly speaking about the technology. But there's also the social phenomenon around what it is, how it will impact society, how it should be built out, how it should be rolled out, who benefits etc.
I've been exposed to some of the ideas, but not the whole gamut of what's important to people and what the ideological implications of all of these stances mean. I asked AI to help me learn, and in doing so, it uncovered some sociological research around distinct emerging 'camps' and philosophies.
Rather than just listing them out, I thought I'd use AI to vibe-code a quiz. The point of this quiz is to learn about the fundamental questions in the AI debate today, take some time to reflect on your own position, and maybe get a label and a fun little polygon out of it.
Each question (except the last) offers you 2 sides of a critical issue, pick which what you lean towards the most (or 'not sure'). The last question asks you to pick your top 3 concerns, and in the end it will tell you what group you ideologically align with best. The groupings aren't exactly scientific, it's more for awareness than accuracy.
I'm saving the responses anonymously so I can see how big each of these groups are. Each response includes a random attempt code and the date; no IP addresses or country data are saved.
Testing tools & how this works
Test mode: nothing you do here is sent or counted. Remove ?test from the address to take the quiz for real.
Each scale question sets two competing statements against each other: A scores 1 and B scores 5. The options in the priorities ranking are shuffled.
Your answers are compared with a draft prototype for each tribe. Tribes only count the questions they have a characteristic position on. AI welfare is matched separately and can go with any tribe. See DESIGN_NOTES.md for the reasoning.
YOUR CLOSEST TRIBE
The chart couldn’t load. Your full results are still below.
Further out means closer to statement B, the second of each pair. Your ranked priorities can’t sit on a scale, so they are listed beside the chart instead of on it.
MEET THE TRIBES
Every tribe, with more to explore.
Your main matches are ranked below. Open any entry to learn about its ideas, why we group them together, and what the evidence supports.
These are our working groupings of overlapping outlooks. The evidence varies: some groupings have community research or documented cooperation behind them; others are articulated positions or our own combinations. None of the sources validates the full set of twelve quiz tribes.
A cross-cutting outlook
AI welfare can sit alongside any main tribe. It is shown here whether or not it matches your answers.
HOW OTHERS LANDED
WHERE YOU PART WAYS
Your departures.
Questions where you’re two or more points from your closest tribe, or ranked priorities it doesn’t share.
BEHIND THE MATCH
Your answers, unpacked.
Each result shows both statements and where you sat between them.
